Which Board Size Fits Your Table?

The grid preset changes more than match length. It changes how readable the pressure feels.

Chain Reaction MAX ships with three board presets, and that choice does more than stretch the session. It changes how aggressively the board punishes mistakes.

Sprint: 6 x 5

This board is small enough that players collide early. Corners matter immediately and bad placements are exposed fast.

Choose it when:

  • you want quick rematches
  • the group is learning the rules
  • you want shorter sessions on one device

Classic: 9 x 6

This is the most balanced preset in the app right now. There is enough room to build shape, but not enough room to hide forever.

Choose it when:

  • players have mixed experience
  • you want the cleanest default for mixed groups
  • you want swing moments without marathon rounds

Warzone: 12 x 8

This preset creates a different rhythm entirely. Expansion matters longer, fronts form more slowly, and the late game can reverse with shocking violence once enough critical cells exist.

Choose it when:

  • four or more players want a longer session
  • the table enjoys long-form tactical play
  • you want room for feints before the real conflict begins

Use board size as difficulty tuning

If newer players feel overwhelmed, shrinking the board can actually help because cause and effect become easier to read. If experienced players feel constrained, the larger board restores breathing room and rewards patience.

That is why board selection belongs in your pre-match ritual, not as an afterthought.
